MJ14-18 Mart Saat 17:00 QA/QC in Mineral Exploration
TITLE: OA/QC APPLICATIONS IN MINERAL EXPLORATION
Date: 14-18th March, 2022 Time: TBA (1 – 1.5 hrs / day)
Trainer: Lynda Bloom, M.Sc., P.Geo.
Content:
1. Quality Control Programs: A discussion of regulatory requirements, “industry-standards” and the effective useof QC
- International mining codes and assay quality control requirements
- Examples of assay QC failures in the press
- Best practice guidelines like CIM MRMR
- Introduction of QC terms; definitions and objectives
2. Sample Collection, Preparation and Analytical Techniques
- Introduction to sample representativity and introduction of bias in the field
- Brief introduction and discussion on how laboratory choices impact QC (detection limits, “curved failure line”,total vs partial digestions, etc.)
- Bulk density methods
3. Assessing Accuracy with Reference Materials (Standards)
- Is it a QC Failure? Defining the correct control limits and deciding on corrective action.
- Actions required for QC failures
- Batch vs. systematic QC failure
- Using blanks to assess contamination
4. Precision and Uncertainty: Error in geochemical data and assays does not undermine their value, but it is essential to understand the associated risk. An assessment of the various tools to assess precision with an emphasis on robust methods is provided.
- Cumulative nature of uncertainty for geological samples
- Sample representativity
5. Assessing Bias: Geologists compare a lot of data sets (drill methods, check assays, historical data to name afew). The “Fallacy of Averages” will be discussed and alternative methods introduced to measure and visualize bias.
